Puel To Lyon Rumor News: Who Do We Believe?

A current circulating rumor is that Lille’s manager, Claude Puel, is heading to Olympique Lyonnais. Although Les gones won the Ligue 1 title for another straight year, they are very close to firing Alain Perrin. French sports magazine, L’Équipe recently claimed that Lyon have decided to hire Puel. The magazine also said that Lille has been negotiating with Le Mans’ current manager, Rudi Garcia. So far we have heard from both clubs on the rumor. Lyon’s Jean-Michel Aulas has denied the rumor, but their director of communications, Olivier Blanc, stressed “he has a profile that interests us like that of Laurent Blanc for example.” Michel Seydoux says that he is tied with the club till 2010:
“We have started a new cycle with a young and promising group. This cycle and the contract of our talented coach coincide. It is out of question to imagine such upheaval.”

Seydoux also denied receiving any phone call from Aulas regarding Puel. The story flips yet again as La Voix du Nord announced those contacts have been made. How does Puel feel about the situation?
“It is always rewarding to be sought after by such a club. But for me it stops there. There is a manager in place at Lyon, and I am under contract with Lille.”

Okay so we have received both sides of the issue from various sources (all of which are pretty reliable), but who do we believe? What I find most disturbing is Puel’s response. His recent comments have not really shown a strong devotion to Lille. Puel just sounds like he would leave the club if he had the chance, but “i’m under contract so I can’t.” I really do not like the sound of that. He has done a lot for the club, and his departure would be a heavy loss.

I think Puel is committed to Lille’s cause. But come on if Lyon offered him a chance I doubt he would say no. He has to rebuild a team at Lille and it’s frustrating with the lack of funds. And the lure of Champions League is also there. Also I think you mentioned before that Puel has been great with Lille but maybe it’s time for a change.

Yeah, but he has something really special going on at Lille, and he could turn them into a big club within the next five years or so. The league needs clubs to challenge Lyon, and Lille could be one of them.
