Lorient Edge Lille In Season Opener
By: Julien | August 12th, 2009
Les Dogues struggled at home in the 2009/2010 season opener. A match marred with defensive errors (”gifts” according to LOSC manager Rudi Garcia). Garcia said Lille failed to take advantage of numerous scoring opportunities. At the beginning of the match Lille placed a lot of attacking pressure on Les Merlus. Despite several chances to score, surprisingly Gameiro opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. Poor defending left Gameiro wide open to receive a pass from Monterrubio. In the second half, Lille’s chances of evening the score (more importantly winning) faded as poor passing in the LOSC defensive area by Plestan and Béria allowed Monterrubio to retain possession for Lorient and let Vahirua score yet again for Lorient (0-2 in the 52′). The final score ended Lille 1-2 Lorient. Only a late own goal by Monterrubio (and he was playing so well!) prevented an early -2 goal differential at the start of the season. Not a good result for a club playing with promise at home in the season opener. LOSC’s next match is against Olympique de Marseille. Instead of going to the Vélodrome with confidence, we head to one of the league title contender’s home with a disappointing result and a hurt morale. Match facts:
