

Close Northern Derby Goes Lille’s Way

A French northern derby ended in Lille’s favor during the 8th week of Ligue 1 football. LOSC played Valenciennes at Stadium Lille Métropole. 14,648 spectators filled the stadium in the northern 48° temperature. Les Rouge et Blanc played tough against Lille all match. They clearly had the desire to take three points from the derby. LOSC had more chances than the visitors to score, but Penneteau kept the match scoreless for most of the match. Unfortunately for Valenciennes, a costly header from Jacques Abardonado sealed a late goal for Lille (69′). Final score LOSC 1-0 Valenciennes. The loss may prove devastating for Valenciennes as they remain just above relegation zone in the Ligue 1 table. Lille on the otherhand moves up to sixth place and tied on points with Bordeaux and Le Mans.
