AS Roma Prospect Signs With Lille
By: Julien | June 24th, 2008
France Football reports that Lille has signed a three year professional contract with Yannis Salibur. Salibur played with the France U-17 Team in a recent European U-17 Championship. He was a member of Lille’s CFA (Divison 4 French football) squad. Yannis shows great potential and has even attracted AS Roma.
Le Parisien reports that Florent Balmont will sign with Lille in the upcoming days. The newspaper says that he agrees with LOSC’s three year contract. The midfielder currently plays for OGC Nice.
Mercato365.fr has revealed that Kevin Mirallas received a four year contract offer from Saint-Étienne. Several other clubs want him including Tottenham, Espanyol, ASSE, Marseille, Bordeaux, and PSG. I think Olympique Lyonnais want him as well. LOSC management, however, still doesn’t want to discuss a potential Mirallas departure. Good news for Lille supporters considering his abilities and passion to score. Somebody please tell me that he will stay. I don’t think we can afford to lose another key player. Especially one with his potential. Mirallas already has several caps with the Belgium National Football Team.
Rafaël Schmitz is now officially an Athénien. Valenciennes FC’s official website announced his arrival. The Brazilian has signed a 3 year contract with the other Nordiste club (Nordiste clubs-Lille, Lens, Valenciennes) worth 1 million euros. Rumors did circulate that he would just stay in Birmingham. He was on loan there last season. Schmitz said that he left Lille on a positive note. According to him it was a calm transfer, meaning there was no falling out with the LOSC management. He also expressed his satisfaction with Valenciennes: “I am glad that I could come to VAFC.”
Senegalese midfielder Guirane N’Daw is now linked to a possible move to Lille. FC Nantes was a close possibility, but they did not meet the financial demands that Sochaux wanted. Along with Lille, Olympique Lyonnais, Rangers, Celtic, Stoke City, and ASSE have shown interest in signing him. N’Daw is a promising young defensive midfielder. I think he would fit well into Garcia’s youth development plan.
Geoffrey Dernis is considering whether he should leave ASSE or not. Benfica, Espanyol, Nancy and Lille want Dernis, which makes his decision difficult. Should he stay in France or play in Spain or Portugal. Staying in France is seen as failure for so many French players. His thoughts:
“I will look at everything. All of the doors are open. But I will not go anywhere. If I leave it will be because the challenge is better elsewhere. ASSE will play in the UEFA Cup. I don’t want to leave for nothing.” Well playing in La Liga is a nice challenge. That sounds like a good option for Dernis. Geoffrey was asked recently if he would return to Lille. His response:
“They spoke to me about it…. LOSC has had bad losses including Claude Puel.” Dernis isn’t yet convinced to return to Lille. Maybe if we make a big signing he might change his mind.

Keep Mirallas. He’s a terrific talent who will only improve with time. Besides Tottenham, I don’t see why he would want to go to the other clubs he’s been linked with.

I am sure Mirallas will stay with Lille at-least this season. I am expecting 10+ goals from him. Let’s see how he does.

Inara, I think that Mirallas might want to go to those other clubs for two reasons: money and UEFA Champions League. I’m sure Marseille, Bordeaux, and Lyon really interest him. If he doesn’t want to stay in France he might want to experience La Liga (Espanyol) or the EPL (Tottenham).

Mirallas is a smart boy and will probably stay with Lille, but at worst move to Bordeuax or Marseille. But considering both made important signings in Gouffran and Ben Arfa recently, it looks unlikely. And Lyon do not need another striker/right winger unless Fred is sold and even though that looks likely, an experienced player will probably be brought in.
As for Salibur, he was impressive in the u-17 championships, showing more purpose in his movement then the over-hyped Kakuta. I hope he gets some ligue 1 experience this year, as even though he is very young and under-sized, his skill might get him by until his body catches up.

Corey, I really do hope Mirallas stays at Lille. You mentioned Bordeaux and Marseille but what about a transfer to a club outside of France? Surely, La Liga and the EPL are attractive options for the young Belgian.

Mirallas isn’t ready for a move abroad and he’s not ready to challenge for a place at a bigger club. If he has a good agent/adviser, they’ll tell him to stay at Lille for at least another season.

Julien, like Inara said, he is not ready for a move abroad. Of course the EPL and La Liga interest him, but if he continues to apply himself he will be even better at the end of next season and then he will have even more offers. A move within France may work for him, where he would have the CL to play for with Bordeuax, but he certainly isnt an automatic starter over Cavenaghi or Bellion (or Gouffran and Obertan). So he should stay in Lille, but if he does move I think it would be wise to atleast stay in France.

I agree with you both. He would be better off continuing to develop in France. Mirallas is pretty young and immature. The EPL and La Liga would probably be too much for him right now.

I think no player should leave France till he is about 23. By 23 they have had enough play time and have developed well mentally as well. Plus with a rotation system in France for European places he also gets to play in Europe for a season at least.
